What the 8 digits of an HSN code mean

Each pair of digits narrows the product down. Example: 3923 90 90 — other plastic articles for packing goods.

39ChapterPlastics and articles
23HeadingArticles for packing goods
90Sub-headingOther packing articles
90Tariff itemOther — the exact item
First 2 digits = chapter, 4 = heading, 6 = sub-heading, 8 = tariff item. The GST rate is usually decided at the 4- or 6-digit level.

FAQ

HSN and GST rates — common questions

How many digits of HSN must I show on my invoice?

If your turnover in the previous year was up to ₹5 crore, show at least 4 digits on B2B invoices. Above ₹5 crore, show at least 6 digits on all invoices. Importers and exporters use the full 8-digit code. Using 8 digits everywhere is the safest practice.

Why does an item show “5% or 18%”?

Some items have two rates depending on details — for example, clothing and footwear are 5% up to ₹2,500 sale value and 18% above, and some machinery parts are 5% only when used for specified renewable-energy devices. Check the condition or ask us.

Is this the latest GST rate?

Rates follow the GST 2.0 structure effective 22 September 2025 (Notification 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate)), with the tobacco changes from 1 February 2026 (Notification 19/2025). Rates can change after a GST Council meeting, so confirm before a large order or a new product.

What is the GST rate on services?

Services use SAC codes (starting with 99). Most services are taxed at 18%; some, like goods transport, hotels and specific job work, have special rates. Send us a short description and we will confirm the SAC and rate.

My product is not in the list. What should I do?

Search by a simpler word or the first 4 digits of the code you think is right. If you still cannot find it, WhatsApp us a photo and description of the product — classification depends on what the product is made of and how it is used.

HSN list and rate mapping adapted from the open khata-standard dataset (CC BY 4.0), which is based on CBIC notifications 9/2025 and 19/2025-Central Tax (Rate). General guidance only — classification of a specific product can differ.
