How it works
- New regime is the default. Slabs: up to ₹4 lakh nil, 5% up to ₹8 lakh, 10% up to ₹12 lakh, 15% up to ₹16 lakh, 20% up to ₹20 lakh, 25% up to ₹24 lakh and 30% above.
- Rebate: no tax up to ₹12 lakh income in the new regime (₹12.75 lakh for salaried after ₹75,000 standard deduction).
- Old regime allows 80C, 80D, HRA and home-loan deductions. Its rebate covers income up to ₹5 lakh.
- 4% health and education cess is added, and surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh with marginal relief.
Common questions
Is there any tax on ₹12 lakh income in the new regime?
No. For Tax Year 2026-27, the rebate makes tax nil up to ₹12 lakh of income in the new regime. A salaried person also gets a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so salary up to ₹12.75 lakh is tax-free.
Which is better for me — old or new regime?
The new regime is usually better unless your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest and so on) are large. Enter your income and deductions above to see both figures side by side.
Can I switch between the old and new regime?
Salaried people can choose each year while filing the return. People with business income can switch back from the new regime only once in their lifetime, so choose carefully.
