01

Reply to every enquiry within an hour

The proofA Harvard Business Review study audited 2,241 US companies. Those that contacted a new web enquiry within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to turn it into a real sales conversation as those that waited even one hour more. Only 37% replied within the hour.

Do this

  • Turn on WhatsApp Business quick replies for prices and timings.
  • One person owns new enquiries every day, including Sundays.
  • If you cannot quote now, reply “Got it — full rate by 4 pm today.”

“Pehle jawab, pehla order.”

02

Look after the customers you already have

The proofResearch by Fred Reichheld of Bain & Company found that in financial services, a 5% rise in customer retention produced more than 25% more profit. Old customers buy more, cost less to serve and bring others.

Do this

  • Call your top 20 customers once a quarter — not to sell, just to check.
  • Fix a complaint the same day, and tell the customer what you changed.
  • Thank repeat customers with priority delivery or a small festive gift.

“Purana grahak, pakka grahak.”

03

Price for profit, not just for volume

The proofA McKinsey study of large companies found that a 1% price rise, with sales volume unchanged, lifted operating profit by about 8%. Small changes in price move profit far more than small changes in sales.

Do this

  • Work out the real cost of each product or service, including your time.
  • Raise prices a little every year instead of a big jump after years.
  • Stop discounting by habit — give discounts only for advance or bulk.

“Sasta bechna aasaan hai, munafa kamana hunar hai.”

04

Keep a cash cushion

The proofThe JPMorgan Chase Institute studied the bank records of US small businesses. The typical one held cash for only 27 days of expenses, and a quarter held less than 13 days. One late payment or slow month can stop such a business.

Do this

  • Move a fixed share of every receipt into a separate reserve account.
  • Build up to at least two to three months of rent, salaries and EMIs.
  • Use the reserve only for real emergencies — then refill it first.

“Mushkil waqt ka saathi — bachat.”

05

Ask happy customers for reviews

The proofThe Spiegel Research Center at Northwestern University found that a product with five reviews was 270% more likely to be bought than one with no reviews. Most of the lift comes from the first few reviews.

Do this

  • Create a free Google Business Profile with correct timings and photos.
  • Send the review link on WhatsApp right after a happy delivery.
  • Reply politely to every review, good or bad.

“Jo dikhta hai, woh bikta hai.”

06

Run the business on checklists

The proofWhen the World Health Organization’s simple surgical checklist was tried in eight hospitals, deaths fell from 1.5% to 0.8% and complications from 11% to 7% (New England Journal of Medicine, 2009). Checklists stop smart people from missing simple steps.

Do this

  • Write a daily opening and closing checklist for the shop or office.
  • Keep a monthly checklist: GST, TDS, PF, rent, bank reconciliation.
  • Tick it every time — even when you are sure.

“Likha hua kaam, bhoolta nahi.”

07

Get paid on time — the law is on your side

The proofIf you are a registered micro or small enterprise, the MSMED Act says a buyer must pay within the agreed time and never later than 45 days after acceptance. Late payment carries compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate.

Do this

  • Register on Udyam — it is free and online.
  • Print the due date and your Udyam number on every invoice.
  • Follow a fixed, polite reminder schedule.

“Rishta bhi bana rahe, paisa bhi time par aaye.”

08

Keep business and personal money separate

The proofMixing the two is the most common reason we see owners who “make sales but never have money”. With one business account, profit, GST and loans all become easier to see and to prove.

Do this

  • Open a current account used only for the business.
  • Pay yourself a fixed monthly salary instead of taking cash as needed.
  • Never pay household bills from the business account.

“Hisab saaf, kaam saaf.”

09

Look at five numbers every month

The proofSales, gross profit, expenses, money to receive and money to pay. Owners who review these monthly spot leaks months before they become losses — and banks lend more easily to them.

Do this

  • Fix one date each month — say the 7th — for a 30-minute review.
  • Compare with last month and the same month last year.
  • Write one action point and check it next month.

“Jo naapa jaata hai, wahi sudharta hai.”

10

Find the 20% that brings most profit

The proofThe 80/20 rule (Pareto principle) is a pattern many businesses see: a small share of customers and products often brings most of the profit, while some loss-making ones eat your time.

Do this

  • List customers and products by profit, not by sales.
  • Give your best customers your best service and stock.
  • Re-price or drop the ones that always lose money.

“Sab ke peeche mat bhaago, sahi ke peeche bhaago.”

11

Improve a little every day

The proofToyota built its success on kaizen — small, continuous improvements suggested by everyone, every day, instead of waiting for one big change.

Do this

  • Ask staff each week: “What wasted our time this week?”
  • Fix one small thing every week — layout, billing, stock, follow-up.
  • Celebrate the person who suggested it.

“Boond boond se sagar bharta hai.”

12

Never miss a due date

The proofLate fees, interest and notices are pure loss — they buy you nothing. GST late fee, interest on TDS and ROC additional fees add up quickly, and a clean record makes loans and tenders easier.

Do this

  • Keep one shared calendar with every GST, TDS, PF and ROC date.
  • Pay tax before the 20th, not on the last evening.
  • Let a professional handle compliance so you can focus on sales.

“Waqt par kaam, bina jurmaane ka aaram.”

Please note: most of these studies were done outside India or in large companies. The direction holds for almost every business, but your own numbers will differ — try one habit at a time and measure it.
