Free GST registration online — step by step
There is no government fee for GST registration. Here is exactly how to apply yourself on gst.gov.in, which documents you need, and what happens next.
Keep these ready
- PAN of the business (proprietor’s PAN for a proprietorship)
- Aadhaar of the proprietor / partners / directors, linked to their mobile
- Photo of the proprietor, partners or directors
- Address proof of the place of business — electricity bill or property tax receipt, plus a rent agreement or consent letter if not owned
- Bank details — cancelled cheque or passbook first page (can be added within 30 days)
- For firms and companies: partnership deed or certificate of incorporation, and authorisation letter
8 steps on gst.gov.in
- Open gst.gov.in. Go to Services → Registration → New Registration.
- Fill Part A. Choose “Taxpayer”, your state and district, business name as per PAN, PAN, email and mobile. Verify both OTPs.
- Note the TRN. You get a Temporary Reference Number. Log in with it to continue Part B within 15 days.
- Fill Part B. Business details, promoters, authorised signatory, principal place of business, goods/services (HSN/SAC) and bank details.
- Upload documents. Clear photos and address proof. Wrong or unclear documents are the top reason for queries.
- Choose Aadhaar authentication. Say Yes — it makes approval faster. Some states may send you to a GST Suvidha Kendra for biometric verification.
- Submit with EVC or DSC. Companies and LLPs need DSC; others can use EVC (OTP). You get an ARN to track the application.
- Reply to any query quickly. If the officer raises a query in REG-03, reply in REG-04 within 7 working days. Once approved, download your certificate (REG-06).
Avoid these common mistakes
- Business name not matching PAN
- Rent agreement without the landlord’s ID or signature
- Choosing composition by mistake when you sell to other states
- Wrong HSN codes — check our HSN & GST rate finder
Common questions
Is GST registration really free?
Yes. The government charges no fee for GST registration. You apply yourself on the official portal gst.gov.in. You pay only if you hire someone to do it for you.
Who must take GST registration?
A business whose turnover crosses the threshold — generally ₹40 lakh for businesses selling only goods in most states and ₹20 lakh for services (lower limits apply in some special category states). Some must register from the first rupee, such as those selling goods to other states, casual taxable persons and people liable under reverse charge.
How long does it take?
If you complete Aadhaar authentication, the officer has 7 working days to process the application. If physical verification is needed, it can take up to 30 days. If the officer takes no action in time, registration is deemed approved.
Do I need biometric verification in Gujarat?
For applicants in some states, including Gujarat, the portal may ask you to book a slot at a GST Suvidha Kendra for biometric Aadhaar authentication and document check. Carry your original documents.
What happens after I get GSTIN?
Add your bank account within 30 days (or before filing your first GSTR-1, whichever is earlier), display your GSTIN at your shop, and start filing returns on time — GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for regular taxpayers.
