Got a tax notice? Understand it in 1 minute

Type the section or form written on your notice — like 143(1), 148, ASMT-10 or DRC-01. See what it means, how serious it is, the time limit and exactly what to do.

· Never ignore a notice — most have a strict time limit.

Notice from the new Income-tax Act, 2025? From 1 April 2026, new notices may quote new section numbers. Use our section finder to see the old number, then search here. Notices for earlier years still use the 1961 Act numbers.

How to use the notice decoder

  1. Find the section or form. It is printed at the top of the notice, e.g. “Notice u/s 143(2)” or “Form GST DRC-01”.
  2. Type it above. The matching notice opens with a simple explanation.
  3. Note the time limit. Mark the reply date in your calendar today.
  4. Act or send it to us. Simple notices you can handle yourself. For scrutiny, reassessment and show cause notices, take professional help.

Common questions

Is every tax notice serious?

No. An intimation u/s 143(1) with no demand needs no reply. But scrutiny (143(2)), reassessment (148/148A) and GST show cause (DRC-01) notices are serious and time-bound.

How do I check if a notice is genuine?

Every income tax notice has a Document Identification Number (DIN). Verify it on the e-filing portal under “Authenticate notice/order issued by ITD”. GST notices can be checked on the GST portal under Services → User Services → View Notices and Orders.

What happens if I miss the reply date?

The officer can decide without hearing you — usually against you — and add interest and penalty. Ask for more time in writing before the due date if you need it.

Can you reply to the notice for me?

Yes. Send us a photo or PDF of the notice on WhatsApp. We will tell you what it means and quote a fixed fee for the reply.
