How to claim HRA with these receipts

  1. Fill once. Tenant, landlord, address, rent and the months.
  2. Download. All receipts come in one PDF — 3 on each A4 page.
  3. Sign. The landlord signs every receipt. For cash rent above ₹5,000, fix a ₹1 revenue stamp and sign across it.
  4. Submit. Give the receipts with Form 124 (earlier Form 12BB) to your employer, or keep them for your ITR.

Common questions

Who can claim HRA?

A salaried person who gets HRA and lives in a rented house can claim the exemption under the old tax regime. HRA exemption is not available in the new tax regime.

When is the landlord’s PAN needed?

Employers ask for the landlord’s PAN when the rent is more than ₹1,00,000 in the year. If the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration from the landlord is needed instead.

Can I pay rent to my parents?

Yes, if you really pay the rent and your parent owns the house. Your parent must show the rent as income in their own return. From tax year 2026-27 you also have to state your relationship with the landlord when claiming HRA. Rent paid to a spouse is generally not accepted.

Which cities get 50% of salary in the HRA formula?

From 1 April 2026, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad count for 50% of salary. Other cities count for 40%.

Is a revenue stamp needed?

A ₹1 revenue stamp is needed on a receipt for a cash payment above ₹5,000. Payments by UPI, bank transfer or cheque leave their own proof, but many employers still ask for signed receipts.

Rent is above ₹50,000 a month — anything extra?

Yes. A tenant paying more than ₹50,000 a month must deduct TDS at 2% and deposit it with the government, even if the tenant is not in business.
